IGO Ambassador, ‘Elite’ Marathon runner and World’s Toughest Mudder, Charlie, gives us an insight into how he ended up on the start line with Paula
Radcliffe, and his future racing plans.

How would you describe yourself?
I’m a yes kinda guy – I have signed up to 29 races this summer, but I also have a day job as an architect.

How did you start on this course in life?
I first got into Obstacle Course Racing (OCR). I played professional polo for 8 years so I have always been interested in the outdoors and nature. Running the London Marathon was one to remember…

Tell me about your first marathon experience
I had never run a marathon but I really wanted to so my plan was to jump the fence and join in. My friend had a place and he gave it to me at the last minute. The caveat was that it was as an elite runner. So when I turned up in my board shorts and holding onto my energy gels in my hands, I found myself standing next to Paula Radcliffe on the start line! 3 hrs 40 minutes after starting I charged over the finishing line.
What do your friends and family think of what you are doing?
Everyone is really supportive, but no one really comes out to support me mainly because they are all over the world. That being said, the atmosphere at each race with the other participants is amazing and truly supportive.
What is your biggest adventure to date?
Each time I do the 24-hour race with Tough Mudder (5-mile loop with 26 obstacles) it seems to get tougher. In the allotted 24 hours, I covered 60 miles in seriously hot daytime temperatures and lows of -4C – that the Lake Las Vegas for you!
How do you approach your nutrition?
If you are doing the endurance 24-hour race, you need to monitor every meal because you need to understand what makes you feel good. This allows me to see what works and what doesn’t. I have found that everyone is different so following someone else’s advice isn’t always the best for you.
What would be your best training tip?
Know the difference between your body being tired and you being lazy. The biggest thing I learnt is to rest.
Why do you do what you do?
The whole package is exciting. The places you go, the people you meet. Everything I do, I want to do the best that I can. This way, if it isn’t good enough I can be satisfied that it is the best I can offer.
What would you say to someone who is on the cusp of doing an adventure?
I would say that if you are nervous about something, it means that you are passionate about it. The first of any race is always nerve racking but on that first finishing line; nothing will compare.

What is your next project?
My next project is the London Marathon but I just need to check with Mo to make sure he is ok with me starting next to him.
